Oct 8, 2010

On behalf of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) HJP held a workshop for several Uzbek authorities in preparation of the country’s launch of a new national biometric identity system. The focus of the two-day workshop was the ICAO Public Key Directory (PKD). Participants learnt about the important features of the ICAO PKD as well as key benefits and requirements of joining the ICAO PKD. "Participation in the Public Key Directory is a key element in the introduction of electronic passports, because it enables authentication of such passports at border control and it facilitates fast and secure border crossings and enhances the trust of other countries in electronic passports," said Istvan Venczel, the Coordinator in Uzbekistan, quoted in the OSCE report published October 8. Through the presentation of best practice implementations, the participants also gained insights into step by step project planning for the introduction of a national PKD.
