OSCE engaged HJP Consulting for ICAO PKD workshop in Albania

Nov 20, 2012

The OSCE engaged HJP Consulting once more to run a seminar on the ICAO Public Key Directory (PKD) for government authorities of the Republic of Albania. The HJP experts demonstrated the benefits of joining the ICAO PKD to increase the security of international travel using electronic passports. The seminar held in Tirana, November 19-20, 2012 was conducted by Markus Hartmann, CEO, and Dirk Hartmann, Senior Consultant of HJP Consulting, Germany.

The workshop, which was organized by the OSCE Transnational Threats Department/Action against Terrorism Unit in co-operation with the OSCE Presence in Albania, brought together 12 Albanian representatives from border, state registry and information technology agencies to learn how the ICAO PKD functions as a multilateral technical platform enabling border control to effectively validate electronic security features stored in the biometric Passport (ePassport).
“The seminar will underline with great details that membership in the ICAO PKD is essential to promote a globally interoperable validation system” said Paul Picard of the Transnational Threats Department/Action against Terrorism Unit. “Presently, this is the best and most cost-effective way to validate the authenticity of biographic and biometric data and thereby to contribute to counter terrorism and to the prevention of illegal cross-border activities.”
The Transnational Threats Department/Action against Terrorism Unit undertook to organise PKD seminars following the OSCE Ministerial Council Decision No. MC.DEC/11/09 which “calls on the participating States to consider becoming participants in the ICAO PKD.” Similar workshops were previously held in Uzbekistan, Moldova and Kyrgyzstan and future activities on PKD are planned in the coming months in Tajikistan and Armenia.
